Rio de Janeiro is served by a national and international airport. You can reach downtown Rio de Janeiro by public transportation or by taxi but you can pick up your car hire in Rio de Janeiro from the international airport, with all major companies having a booth there. Rio de Janeiro is the Brazilian tourism capital. Known by its inhabitants, the Cariocas, as the "Cidade Maravilhosa", its reputation precedes it. Rio de Janeiro is the name for both the State and the City. Rio de Janeiro, was discovered on January (Janeiro) 1, 1502 by Portuguese navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river (Rio).

Rio de Janeiro is a city located in southeastern Brazil. The population of Rio de Janeiro is just over six million people making one of the most densely populated cities in all of South America. Rio de Janeiro is mainly known for its beaches. Even though there are many other attractions in the city, the beaches are a highlight for any visitor. Rio de Janeiro is a major commercial and financial center. Numerous corporate headquarters and domestic and foreign banks are located there.

Rio de Janeiro is known across the world for its beaches, its spectacular samba parades during Carnival, its obsession with football—and, since City of God, also its favelas and gang violence. Rio de Janeiro is mainly made up of seas, mountains and forests. This diversity adds to its outstanding beauty.

The very special beach resort of Grumari is especially close to Rio de Janeiro and one of the most popular excursions, offering a mixture of tranquility and excellent surfing conditions. Rio de Janeiro is synonymous with carnival, which is the biggest and loudest of all carnivals in Brazil. The 5 day carnival is every February at the end of the Brazilian summer.

Rio de Janeiro is commonly referred to as A Cidade Maravilhosa and the marvellous city really does live up to its name, not only during Carnival celebrations. With its fabulous beaches, the Maracanetadium; one of the world’s largest football stadiums, its samba music and most importantly its marvellous people, it is an event in itself. Rio de Janeiro is not the only South American city with this type of squatter settlements. But what make Rio’s favelas unique is their locations. Rio de Janeiro is located in the southeast region, near the Atlantic Ocean between the mountains and beautiful beaches.

Rio de Janeiro is located at 22 degrees, 54 minutes south latitude, 43 degrees 14 minutes west longitude. The population of the city proper of Rio de Janeiro is about 6,150,000 (as of 2004), occupying an area of 1256 km (485 sq. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most spectacular cities on the planet. In one glance you can see the wealth of areas like Ipanema or Copacabana and the poverty of the surrounding favelas.
